While unresolved political issues took their toll on the popularity of Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto in 2014, the year as well brought significant evolution in the form of Congressional approval for a far-reaching reform package.


However, the government has struggled in its efforts to tackle weighty problems, such as organised crime and poor levels of security, which have helped contribute to a slump in the President’s approval rating. A poll showed his popularity fell to 39% in November from 46% three months before, the lowest for any Mexican president since the mid-1990s.
